Today’s world is quite filled with criminality – but unfortunately, not in an obvious way. We are aware of the fact that people are robbing banks and businesses that people break into homes and kill other people, but the police force has weakened and the crime force has raised new standards. Because of this, we reached a point where we cannot know who is responsible for what – who robbed that place or who killed that person – you could be living with a robber right next door to you. Amazingly, with the very well kept secrets it is almost impossible to know whom can you trust. Moreover, when it comes to owning a business it can be rather disastrous to hire a burglar.
Imagine that you as a business owner you have to be very careful with whom you hire – of course, they will apply for the job, but you might as well ask them to bring their criminal record check with them, or have a team check their records as soon as they apply for the job. You see, everybody says you have to give another chance to those that made mistakes at one point – but you do not know exactly where and how much you can trust. If you want to build a serious relationship with your employees then a certain degree of trust is imperative. You cannot simply home that they will not blow your trust away – you have to have some kind of assurance.
Doing a criminal record check, discussing carefully with the individual and keeping a close eye on him within his first months of work can prove to be a worthy solution.
You may say: but I barely want to hire a gardener that will trim my roses occasionally, why should I bother checking the poor more for criminal records. You could not imagine that many people that had or have troubles with the law try to appear as simple men that look for a honest place to earn money. Would you enjoy being the hideout for a troublemaker? This means that no matter how unimportant the job you are offering is, you have to take care of whom you will be dealing with.
A friend of mine once said that you should radically check your possible future employer no matter if you are looking for an accountant at Fort Knox or a plumber for your new house.
There is only one workforce that you can, in some ways trust: individuals under 18 – if you need an easy to do job done fast, you might consider hiring a teenager. You do not need to bother checking his criminal records because any teenager’s record is cleared on the day they reach 18 years, therefore if he is not at that moment in prison, you should not worry too much. You can still be careful and ask a tricky question to see whether he is honest, or if he ever did something that he might be sorry of, but you should not stress yourself too much with criminal record checks at this level.
